The Effects of Lead on Some Markers of Liver and Kidney Functions of Lead Recycling Factory Workers are Mediated Through Increased Oxidative Stress

Background: Lead is a highly toxic metal of great public health importance. Objectives: This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the kidney and liver function status markers oxidative stress among lead recycling factory workers in Anambra State, Nigeria. Methods: A total 82 subjects (41 experimental 41 control subjects) aged 20-60 years were recruited this study. levels whole blood measured using atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) uric acid as well activities glutathione S-transferase (GST), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyltransferase (γ-GT) spectrophotometric method. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase determined colorimetric method Berthelot’s Jaffe slot methods used measure urea creatinine levels, respectively. Results: The mean SOD, GST, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) significantly lower compared with group (P<0.05), whereas ALT, AST, ALP, γ-GT, lead, MDA, urea, creatinine, increased (P<0.05). Furthermore, level found positively correlated MDA but negatively eGFR GST showed positive negative correlations Conclusion: revealed significant alterations some biochemical parameters possible link between effects on liver.
